Why we built TeacherPay
Teacher pay looks simple from a job advert — a single number on a pay scale — and turns out to be genuinely complicated once you factor in TLR payments, six different Teachers' Pension Scheme contribution tiers, London weighting, student loan plans, and a pension system that changed shape twice in the last two decades. We built TeacherPay because we couldn't find a single site that modelled all of this properly, in one place, for free.
We already build similar independent pay and pension tools for other UK public sector professions. TeacherPay applies the same approach to teaching: real calculation engines built on published rates, not rough rules-of-thumb, with the underlying rates and thresholds clearly dated so you always know how current a figure is.
Our sister sites
TeacherPay is built by the same independent team behind FrontlinePay, which does for NHS staff what TeacherPay does for teachers, and PolicePay, which does the same for UK police officers, staff and candidates. Each site applies the same standard: real calculation engines built on published, dated rates rather than rules of thumb, free core tools, and clear editorial sourcing. What we're independent of
TeacherPay is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or funded by the Department for Education, Teachers' Pensions, the School Teachers' Review Body, any teaching union, any academy trust, or any local authority. We link to all of these organisations' own official resources throughout the site, and we'd always encourage you to check a figure that matters against the official source before making a financial decision — see our editorial policy for how we source and review our figures.
How we make money
Every core calculator on this site — take-home pay, Teachers' Pension projection, and TLR — is completely free, with no account and no paywall. A small number of deeper tools (the Annual Allowance and McCloud Remedy calculators) have an optional Pro layer, available either as a one-off unlock or an all-access subscription. That revenue is what funds keeping the free tools free, accurate, and maintained as rates change each year. See pricing for details.
