Teacher Recruitment — Interview Prep, Applications & Checks
Everything on the UK teacher recruitment process: AI-powered interview practice, personal statement review, DBS checks, safer recruitment and what schools actually look for.
Independent guidance, not affiliated with the DfE, Teachers' Pensions or any teaching union.
Getting hired as a teacher involves more than a good CV — safer recruitment rules, DBS checks, reference verification and often a full day of interview activities (a lesson observation, a written task, a panel interview) make the process more involved than most graduate hiring. This hub covers both sides: what schools are actually checking for and why, and practical tools to help you prepare a stronger application and interview performance.

Frequently asked questions
Is safer recruitment the same everywhere? +
The core legal requirements (an enhanced DBS check, verified references, identity checks) are the same across all UK schools, but individual schools and academy trusts can add extra steps — a written task, a lesson observation, a panel with pupils on it — so always ask what the specific process involves when you're invited to interview.
How long does a DBS check take before I can start? +
It varies, typically 1-4 weeks depending on your history and the specific check level, though it can take longer if you've lived abroad. Schools can allow you to start under supervision with a 'barred list check' in place while the fuller DBS check completes, in some circumstances — ask your school's HR/business manager what applies to your situation.
Do employment gaps automatically count against me? +
No, but you will be asked to explain any gap of a month or more as standard safer recruitment practice — this is routine, not a red flag in itself. Being ready with a brief, honest explanation (further study, caring responsibilities, travel, a previous role ending) is all that's usually needed.
